A Mazars Survey about large European Insurance Groups

The areas of greatest subjectivity and interest within the financial statements of large European insurance groups as at 31 December 2009

Mazars analyses, in a new Mazars Insight, the 2009 annual reports of large European insurance groups, to highlight the sensible points of the year.

We have performed an analysis of the financial information disclosures based on the financial statements of several of the largest European insurance and reinsurance groups. Our analysis focuses on accounting disclosures and the application of International Financial Reporting Standards (‘IFRS’) to sensitive

issues inherent in the industry. However, on some topics, we have extended the scope of our analysis to include financial commentary in general.

This year, the survey has focused on the following topics:

  • Goodwill, associated tests for its recoverability, and disclosure information;
  • Communication by insurers on financial instruments and related risks;
  • Deferred policyholders’ participation assets, asset impairment and implementation of the amendments to IFRS 7;
  • Information related to capital adequacy through solvency margin; and
  • Disclosures relating to embedded values.
